Last spots on board in 2024 during the special Whisky expedition28 July - 7 September and a personal note from our whisky expert Wim Wamelink. A small number of cabins have become available for the 10-day whisky expedition from 28 August to 7 September 2024. A good time for us to introduce you to our whisky expert Wim Wamelink, who is happy to share his plans and insights for this trip with you: Message to the participants of Tallship Thalassa Whisky Sailing Trip from August 28th to September 7th, 2024 “Dear sailing and whisky lover, At the end of August we will meet aboard the Thalassa to experience together the adventure of 10 days at sea, sailing along the Scottish coast and several whisky distilleries to visit. Lots to enjoy: the nature, the sea, the sailing, the culture, the whiskies and the conviviality. I would like to introduce myself to you in advance: My name is Wim Wamelink, former hotelier/owner of whisky bar de Heerenkamer with 450 open whiskies. My current activities are hosting whisky tastings (100+ per year) and whisky trips to Scotland. For this sailing trip, I was asked to attend as your whisky host. And that's what I love doing, letting guests enjoy stories and whisky. The program for this trip is described but much depends on the weather and wind. I am not a skipper so I don't know much about that. We follow the captain's program. But if we get close to whisky distilleries I will certainly do my best to arrange a visit for the whisky lovers. It is free to everyone to come along then but in fact there is a cost associated with such a visit. On the first day, Wednesday August 28, it is possible for all of us to visit Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso. The distillery is located 8 miles from the departure port of Scrabster where we moor at the quay for the first night. On Thursday we will sail/sail north for the Orkney Isles where we moor in Scapa Bay. At the Scapa distillery I will announce our visit for a Tour. I will do the same at Highland Park distillery. All depends on boating conditions and transportation options but I am sure a visit with some drams will work. The Orkneys have a lot more to offer besides the 2 distilleries but I'll tell you more about that when we get there. After a more extensive sailing trip we will visit Stornoway and Lewis. Of course I will organize a visit to the Abhainn Dearg for those who are interested. Meanwhile, it will be on Monday that we arrive at the Outer Hebrides where we will explore the island of Harris more extensively. Harris Tweed and Harris distillery are well noted on the schedule! After all this impressive nature of the remote islands, the cruise heads to one of Scotland's most famous islands called Skye. Where it used to be written on the label of the Talisker whiskey: "From the only distillery on Skye" they have changed that with the coming of a 2nd distillery Torabhaig to "The Oldest Distillery" on Skye. Of course we are going to check it out and taste some drams. While we are in the neighbourhood Torabhaig distillery is also on the agenda because Thalassa is going to dock in Armadale harbor Wednesday night and from there we can arrange that excursion on Thursday morning with transportation. The sails are set to sail to Mull in the afternoon and the next destination is Tobermory, located in a bay. Here is the distillery of the same name where manager Olivier is already waiting for us for a private Tour & tasting. The end of this adventurous trip is in the port town of Oban. A lively center with its famous Oban distillery. Nice for a visit and maybe afterwards to the Pub The Oban Inn. I look forward to meeting you on a wonderful trip together. See you August 28 on board the Tallship Thalassa.” Slainte, Wim Wamelink For bookings: Whisky expedition.
