Thalassa Ship's journal
Ship’s Journal ThalassaAdventurous sailing voyages in 2023In this edition of our Ship's Journal, we are pleased to highlight some new and special voyages in our range: Scottish walks and whisky aboard tallship ThalassaScotland makes many a walker's heart beat faster. Who doesn't know them, the Cairngorms, the West Highland Way, the route along Loch Ness? Mainland Scotland is easily accessible but the Scottish islands are not. Fantastic to walk there, but how to get there? The robust yet comfortably equipped Dutch three-masted barquentine Thalassa offers up to 30 guests a fully organised trip to some of the Scottish islands of the Inner Hebrides. Walking along alternating good paths and sometimes boggy terrain, you will be introduced to the culture, history and nature of this beautiful region. During the trip, we pass 11 whisky distilleries. A great opportunity to combine walks with a visit to some of these distilleries. Our walking and whisky guide Gerard Spaans is on board to provide you with the necessary knowledge and guidance this week. The trip starts from the pretty harbour town of Oban. Walks are marked out on the islands of Mull, Tiree, Colonsay, Islay and at Campbeltown on the Kintyre peninsula. These routes are easy to walk on and the maximum difference in altitude is 142 metres On the Isle of Mull, we moor in Tobermory. There we have a choice of two walks of 5-6 km, one to the lighthouse in the north, the other through Aros park with its waterfalls. The walks on Tiree and Colonsay are more challenging, longer and offer even more stunning scenery. The last port is Campbeltown. A short walk with very nice views over the bay is planned there. On the way back to Troon, you may be able to see the coast of Ireland in the distance, perhaps a good idea for another trip aboard Thalassa.... Don't want to spend a day hiking? Stay quietly on board with a book, enjoy seals in the harbour or visit the local pub. In Scotland, there is always conversation. Curious? On board: 26 August 2023 in Oban Price per person: € 1275.00 Sailing roaming along the French and English coastsEspecially for those equipped with seaman's/woman's legs, we have planned an 18-day summer sailing voyage along the French and English coasts. The trip may look like this (wind and weather permitting): Thalassa will be docked in Le Havre where boarding will take place for the Channel voyage. A crossing to the Solent follows, where the ship will anchor in Osborne Bay facing Queen Victoria's summer palace. Weather permitting, there will be an opportunity to visit Cowes in the evening. We then continue our journey west through the Solent passing the Needles (beautiful chalk rock formations). Later that day, Thalassa anchors at Swanage, north of Peveril Point. A crossing to the most charming channel island of Alderney is also part of this voyage, arriving there the ship anchors in St Anne harbour. There is time for cycling and walking on the island and, of course, a pub visit. The island has beautiful beaches and an imposing fort called Fort Clonque. The next day we sail south into the bay of Mont Saint Michel and bend to starboard with destination the reede of St Malo, where we anchor. We continue our ramble north towards England, arriving in Torbay (where William III landed in 1688 to become subsequent King of Great Britain) on 28 June. We will visit Brixham. We will also visit Dartmouth (more southerly located) as a stopover before sailing on to Salcombe. Continuing on to the beautiful bay of Falmouth and thereafter to the Scilly Isles for a visit (if we are allowed ashore given the weather). We will then cross again to the wild coast of Brittany and visit Aber Wrach, Roscoff (ile de Batz) and/or Lezardrieux in the following days. The end of this wonderful trip will be introduced by sailing before the wind back east (possibly, if there is still time, via Guernsey) The wanderlust will end in Boulogne on 7 July Interested?
