A sketch of the travel programme:
Let the wind and tide guide you as you enjoy the fascinating Scottish landscape from the unique perspective of a ship. After departing from the port of Oban on Saturday 5 September 2026, the sturdy three-masted barque Thalassa will sail northwards to Scrabster over the course of 7 days. Accompanied by a whisky expert we will visit distilleries along the way.
Oban
This whisky sailing trip starts in Oban and ends in Scrabster. Oban is a larger regional town and offers plenty of entertainment in addition to its well-known distillery. From McCaig’s Tower above the town you’ll have a stunning view of the harbour, the bay beyond and the island of Mull. Along the harbour there are various seafood restaurants and between the train station and ferry terminal you can enjoy freshly prepared shellfish. It’s well worth arriving a day early.
Whisky and sailing along the Scottish west coast
On this whisky sailing trip from Oban to Scrabster, we will visit a number of distilleries. Sailing through The Sound of Mull is breathtaking — castles, green hills, rugged cliffs, and rich marine life alternate. We sail along the magically beautiful west coast. With a bit of luck we may spot dolphins before heading towards the whisky-rich islands.
Island hopping along whisky distilleries
The Hebrides offer a stunning landscape full of whisky hotspots. From the Inner Hebrides with Tobermory Distillery on Mull and Talisker Distillery on Skye, to the Outer Hebrides with Harris Distillery on Harris. Across from Tobermory lies Ardnamurchan, a distillery that is difficult to reach by land. Weather permitting we will anchor in the bay and make a visit.
Orkney Islands
The Orkney Islands are an archipelago of about 70 islands off the northeast coast of Scotland, known for their rich archaeological heritage, beautiful landscapes, and excellent sailing conditions. From Scapa Bay, the historic centre of Kirkwall — the capital of Orkney — is within walking distance. The charming town of Stromness is slightly further by sea. In and around Kirkwall you’ll find Highland Park Single Malt, Scapa Single Malt and other whisky distilleries.
Scrabster
Scrabster is a harbour town on Scotland’s north coast in the Caithness region. It offers stunning views of the rugged coastline and the nearby Orkney Islands, excellent seafood and historical sights. From Scrabster it’s a short taxi ride (approx. 5 minutes) to Thurso, from where you can take a scenic train ride through unspoiled Northern Scotland to Inverness. Thurso is also home to Wolfburn Distillery — the northernmost whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland.
