Our trips are determined by wind and weather but of course we have plans and goals we are committed to. We provide each trip with a comfortable and adventurous programme, whereby Scotland and its distilleries can be explored on foot, by car or by public transport. Meanwhile, it’s good fun on board Thalassa, known for its excellent cuisine and unique whisky bar on board. It certainly doesn’t stop at brown beans at the famous Captain’s Dinner. During this trip, you will be taken into the wonderful world of whisky by whisky expert Bob Wenting.
This wonderful journey of discovery to Oban via magnificent Scottish islands and its distilleries starts in the picturesque fishing town of Ullapool. It includes the distilleries of Ardnamurchan and Tobermory that can be visited. So are Talisker on Skye and Raasay, located not far from Skye. Raasay, located in the Inner Hebrides is famous for its bagpipers and the song ‘Mrs MacLeod of Raasay’, which is also home to the Isle of Raasay Distillery: every drop of whisky and/or gin is distilled, matured and bottled on this island with water from the Raasay Distillery spring.
Also on our wish list for this trip is Harris Distillery in Tarbert (the largest town on Harris Island) where the work of local men and women of this island mixes with products of local nature, resulting in an Outer Hebridean whisky of stature. Via Loch Harport, the ship sails to Carbost where we find the famous Talisker Distillery. Talisker is the oldest operating distillery on Skye, this is where world-famous whiskies are created, shaped by the sea.
H3 Nature, serenity and innovation
South of Skye is the Isle of Rum, also known as nature’s playground, study material for universities and nature agencies. Wild goats and Rum ponies have been present on the island for centuries. Alternative to Rum on this trip is Mallaig (wind and weather permitting), a fascinating place where we can taste the atmosphere of a working fishing port, at the same time, Mallaig’s remote location makes it a great place to relax and take beautiful walks (Mallaig Circuit) with great views over the harbour and Loch Nevis. With about 30 inhabitants and an island area just surpassing that of Terschelling, Rum is a nice change from the fine whiskies.
Wind permitting, we visit the modern Ardnamurchan Distillery. Only a few years old, the distillery combines a mix of new technology with a strong emphasis on sympathy and respect for the local environment. There is little waste and the staff at this distillery take great pride in working with the local community. Thalassa then sets sail for Tobermory, Isle of Mull, Scotland’s third largest island. Tobermory is the largest town on the island, situated in the north-east and defined by brightly coloured houses right on the waterfront and many small shops with an artisanal character. The final destination of this trip is Oban. Oban is an accessible place, easy to explore on foot with many small galleries and independent shops to browse around.
Please note: for all parts of this programme applies wind and weather permitting.
