Sail along the rugged west coast of Scotland aboard Tall Ship Thalassa. Over seven days you travel from Scrabster to Oban, passing islands rich in nature, history and Scottish character. Join the crew in setting the sails, enjoy life on deck and, with a bit of luck, spot dolphins while the wind fills the canvas.
Along the way we berth in atmospheric harbours, walk across green hills, visit ancient castles and – for those interested – taste whisky at its place of origin. No two days are the same as we sail entirely dependent on wind and weather – exactly what makes this voyage so special.

Outline of the itinerary
Let yourself be guided by wind and tide and experience the fascinating Scottish landscape as it can only be seen from the water. After departing from the harbour of Scrabster on Saturday 8 May 2027, the impressive three-masted barquentine Thalassa will take us to Oban in seven days, accompanied by Scotland expert Gerard Spaans.
Our journey begins in Scrabster, a fishing village on Scotland’s rugged north coast. The route there follows the iconic North Highland Railway, winding through dramatic landscapes and along the coastline to the northernmost tip of the mainland. Those arriving early may wish to visit Thurso, for example to tour the Wolfburn Distillery or enjoy a refreshing walk along the ocean.
From Scrabster we set course for the Orkney Islands, where nature, history and hospitality meet. In Kirkwall and Stromness you can wander through historic streets, visit museums or sample a local whisky at Highland Park or Scapa. Hiking enthusiasts may enjoy a challenging yet rewarding walk from the prehistoric site of Skara Brae to Stromness, following rugged cliffs and open sea. Afterwards, a welcoming pub awaits. Depending on wind and tide, we may also call at Flotta or Hoy, islands that played an important role in the defence of the British Isles during the First and Second World Wars – history that is still visible today. On Hoy, an impressive museum is located directly at the quay.
We then sail south along the west coast through The Minch, the famous strait between the mainland and the Hebrides. This area is rich in marine life, and with some luck we may spot dolphins, seabirds or even whales. On the horizon appear islands such as Skye, Rum and Mull – unspoilt worlds of rugged mountains, deserted beaches, small fishing villages and pristine nature.

Tidal conditions may require a call on the mainland, for example at Lochinver, where a fairy-tale landscape of mountains, lochs and remote bays awaits. Wherever we stop, beautiful walking routes, local stories and warm encounters with the region’s renowned hospitality await us.
Our journey ends in Oban, a lively coastal town with welcoming pubs, a picturesque harbour and breathtaking views over the bay from McCaig’s Tower. The perfect place to reflect on an unforgettable sailing voyage along one of Europe’s most beautiful coastlines.

Please note: All our voyages are subject to wind and weather. While departure and arrival ports remain fixed, the exact route and daily programme may vary according to conditions – making every journey unique.
