On Saturday, the captain and his crew will welcome you on board Thalassa. That same evening or the next morning, we start our sailing trip with, wind and weather permitting, the first destination being Dublin (1 day sailing). Dublin, the capital of Ireland, is known for its vibrant culture, rich history and beautiful architecture, including the iconic Dublin Castle and the bustling Temple Bar district.
After arriving in Dublin, we will spend a day exploring the city. Enjoy a visit to the Guinness Storehouse for a lesson in brewing the famous Irish beer or take a stroll along the banks of the River Liffey.
We will then set sail for the Isles of Scilly, a brisk sailing trip where you can enjoy all that comes with real sailing. Located on the south-west coast of England, the Scilly Isles are known for their beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters and unspoilt nature. On St. Mary’s, the largest island, take the day to take in the breathtaking scenery and stroll the tranquil beaches. Take a walk along the scenic coastal paths or stroll through the historic Tresco Abbey Garden on New Grimsby.
With Scilly nature still fresh on our minds and under our soles, we sail to Dartmouth in a day. Located on the River Dart in Devon, England, Dartmouth is a charming port town with colourful houses, medieval streets and a bustling harbour. Explore Dartmouth, visit the medieval Dartmouth Castle or take a walk along the River Dart.
From Dartmouth, we continue our journey, crossing The Channel to Alderney (Guernsey), 15 kilometres off the French coast of Normandy. The Channel Island is known for its quiet beaches, picturesque harbours and fascinating history, including the remains of an ancient Roman settlement. Alderney is Guernsey’s smaller sister, known for the widely loved film The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
Mainland France stretches through the waters of The Channel to Alderney. If the tide allows, we reach back and sail to the lively port city of Cherbourg. With its rich maritime history, there is plenty to experience in Cherbourg. For example, the imposing Gare Maritime (Terminal) houses the Cité de la Mer museum, where play and science come together to explore the depths of the sea. The Terminal, built in Cherbourg’s typical art deco style, is divided into the submarine and ocean sections. Discover the largest submarine open to visitors in the world: the fascinating Redoutable (‘Dreaded’). Experience the attraction On a marché sous la mer (We walked under water) and the permanent exhibition on passenger ships and emigration, more than 100 years after the Titanic’s legendary visit to Cherbourg.
Other museum highlights in Cherbourg include the Musée Thomas Henry (third largest museum in Normandy), the Fort du Roule: French and German fortifications with the Musée de la Libération (Liberation Museum), and the Musée d’histoire naturelle et d’ethnographie (Emmanuel-Liais, Museum of Natural History and Ethnography), where a walk through this amazing and unusual botanical garden leads through five continents. Château des Ravalet, a castle park measuring a whopping 17 hectares and labelled Jardin Remarquable (Extraordinary Garden) brings together greenery and architecture. Finally, indispensable in Cherbourg is the impressive Grande Rade (Great Rede), an 18th-century ‘fortress-wall-in-sea,’ 4 kilometres long and detached from the coast.
Finally, we will continue our journey to Le Havre, a major port city in Normandy, known for its modern architecture and lively art scene. After arriving in Le Havre, we will disembark, looking back on an unforgettable sailing trip full of adventures and new experiences. Le Havre will host the start of the Sail Training International Races in which Thalassa will also participate. Do you still have time? Then experience the unique liveliness of this nautical spectacle for one or two days. Le Havre has many charming hotels and excellent restaurants to end your holiday aboard Thalassa.
Please note: for all parts of this programme applies wind and weather permitting.
